Dress of the day - Striped sweater dress by Banana Republic

Who says looking polished equals being uncomfortable?

This sweater dress is about as easy as it gets - just slip it on and go. It's a great piece for early fall, because you can start out wearing without tights (picture after the jump) and then pile on the leggings and accessories as the weather cools. We love it cinched at the waist with a belt because it helps the dress show off your shape.

As an added bonus this dress is a silk/viscose/cotton blend that's machine washable. See? We told you it was easy!

Fall clothes for hot climates

Pair a heavy skirt with a light and airy topTry a high bootIf not boots, at least keep the shoe subtantialWrap it up with a scarfDark, opaque tights help your short skirts span seasons

Those of us who live in warm regions face the same challenge every fall -- so many hot new trends come out, but for the most part, it's just too hot to wear them! Sure, there might be a day or two in December or January during which we can wear a wool coat without sweating to death, but most of us aren't going to blow our budget buying items we'll only wear once or twice a season. But still, we want to step into fall fashion -- what to do, what to do?

We have several suggestions that will keep you looking hot but feeling comfortably cool. Those of you who live in colder climates might be able to use these suggestions early in the season, but for some of you, these will be ways to look seasonal until spring!

Back to School: Gymboree

Gymboree is one of the biggest names in quality clothing for children, so it should come as no surprise that they have a great catalog of school fashions (and Halloween costumes- yes, already).

Gymboree has fun and playful couture for kids that are fun and playful. Convenient, don't you think? Like many of the other popular retailers of kidwear they understand the value of the the classics, and as such build upon them. The result is a solid line of timeless clothing and clever accessories.

There's something really refreshing about seeing a celebrity rock a trend in a way that's 100% accessible to the rest of us. There's nothing over-the-top about Duffy's take on this season's nautical trend -- she's taken a number of simple pieces and put them together in a way that really makes a statement.

This look is something you could pull off for school, a date, or just out on the weekend because it's casual yet totally pulled together. Check out the gallery for tips on making Duffy's look your own!

Look like a Gossip Girl with the help of Rugby

As was mentioned earlier, Gossip Girl kicks of with a new season on September 1st. While most of us will never be reared in super-exclusive private schools or live in lush New York apartments like our favorite television frenemies Serena and Blair, that doesn't mean we can't look as if we did.

Ralph Lauren's younger label, Rugby, has just opened its online store and it's full of preppy garb like polo tops, blazers, chinos, buttoned-down oxford shirts, berets, and luxe knit sweaters. One can even customize their very own rugby with bold stripes or a regal crest.

So you can make your own prep school uniform without having to take any exams, which is always a good thing. Now, just don't get into any trouble like Serena and Blair because, well, there won't be any juicy plot to bail you out.

Back to School: The Children's Place

The Children's Place is a one stop destination for the shopping parent of school-aged children. Hence the name.

They carry everything from shoes to underwear and everything in-between. Their clothing is cute and classic, sticking to seasonal influences more than those of pop culture. The result is a timeless quality that will look great on kids now and their younger siblings later.

See for yourself:

SNL Jeans: A video collection

Urlesque just made our day. They took the time (and we're guessing they enjoyed it) to put together this collection of the "Top 5 SNL Skits About Jeans."

We couldn't help but noticing that all of the videos are fairly old. The Mom Jeans clip is already considered a classic at this point and everything else is from even older casts. Where's the love SNL? Aren't jeans still funny? Where's Andy Samberg's jean short about jean shorts? Laser Cats can't touch denim blue gold in a box!

At least we have these gems. SNL and Urlesque, we thank you from the bottom of our Bad Ideas.

The two we featured are our favorites, but they're all good. See them all at Urlesque!

Western wear update: Inventor of the pearl snap shirt dies

Western wear junkies, we have suffered a great loss. The man, the legend, Jack A. Weil -- founder of Rockmount Ranch Wear and reported inventor of what we now know as the "pearl snap shirt" -- left his home for that big rodeo in the sky this week.

According to his grandson, now president of the company, not only was Jack the first to design work shirts with pearl snaps, but he is also responsible for introducing pockets with sawtooth flaps -- this guy was obviously a genius. Weil's designs have been worn by all kinds of celebrities from Clarke Gable to Matthew McConaughey. The Rockmount pearl snap was even the shirt of choice for Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal on the set of Brokeback Mountain. We figured it was Wrangler.

Apparently, he managed to reach the ripe old age of 107. We wonder if he followed the Ernest Borgnine fountain of youth method?

Dress of the day - Gap strappy tiered dress

Dresses like this are made for the last hot days of summer - it's an easy style that you can just as easily wear on top of your bathing suit or out to a casual lunch. We like the "nude rose" shade pictured here, because it's as refreshing as a fruit sorbet. Pretty!

Made of 100% cotton, the roomy tiered style and empire waist won't stick to your skin (an important consideration when the mercury soars) while the scoop neck and elasticized back will show just enough skin to still look hot. Pair this dress with dainty jewelry and strappy sandals and get out and enjoy those lazy summer days!

Eva Longoria to create clothing line?

Just when we thought the celebrity-turned-crappy designer phenomenon had died down, we get this news from our friends across the pond:

Apparently, Desperate Housewives actress Eva Longoria is considering creating a fashion line like her very posh buddy Victoria Beckham. On the prospects of owning her own line, Beckham says: "I would love to design one day. I do not have the time right now but I would love to develop a home line or a clothing line. I am thinking about it."

Hmm, we could stomach a collection of luxe duvets and sheet sets by the petite lady. But frocks? Eh, not so much.

Liv Tyler is the new face of Gap

The boyfriend cardigan has never looked so sexy.

Gap's fall ads feature a gorgeous Liv Tyler wearing their boyfriend cardigan. And nothing else. But if anyone could convince us that wearing nothing but a couple of oversized cardigans looks good, it's got to be Liv.

Miss Sixty teams up with YOOX

Online shopping, we're all obsessed with it, so listen up:

Beginning this September, people who flip over Miss Sixty's sexy denim, flirty tops, and rock 'n' roll accessories can purchase the brand's goodies over at Yoox, the Italian e-commerce retailer who plays host to cool labels like Pierre Hardy and Alaia.

The Miss Sixty shop on Yoox will launch on the 7th of next month -- right after the brand presents its spring '09 collection under the tents at Bryant Park. In addition to all of the new designs that will be taking up Yoox's front page, there will be, "original content, including video and images from the show, celebrity sightings and product."

Not to mention an exclusive limited-edition t-shirt, oh my!

Celia Birtwell for Topshop

A couple of months ago, British designer, Celia Birtwell, blessed those stateside with a collection of flowing tops and dresses made from her ultra feminine prints. They were sold at everyone's favorite over-priced mall store, Express.

Gallery: Celia Birtwell for Topshop

While the pieces were definitely swoon worthy, their price tags, um not so much. Not to mention Express never really told anyone that, say, they had snagged the legendary Birtwell to hook-up their fashion tome.

So we're slightly annoyed/excited that Celia created a much more affordable line for British retailer, Topshop. The former emotion because we wish we didn't have to cough up the extra cash for shipping. But when we can potentially take home adorable retro-inspired jumpsuits like the one featured right, how could anyone say no?

Rapscallion by Samantha Pleet for Urban Outfitters

For Fall '08, Brooklyn designer Samantha Pleet, 27, showed a fun and flirty collection called "Rapscallion." It's about women who are super-badd and girlie-hott... at the same time. She revisits and diffuses the theme for a new collection that hits Urban Outfitters, exclusively, in October. New pieces will roll out every 2 months for the upcoming year.

During September's New York Fashion Week, S/S '09, Pleet plans a video installation of her Samantha Pleet woman's wear collection, with select men's wear looks by Patrick Pleet. According to a recent release, "Samantha has a surprise or two up her sleeve." Great. We like surprises.

Check out the entire collection for Urban.

Junk Food is good for kids (to wear)

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

Junk Food Clothing makes t-shirts for everyone, man, woman and child, but they aren't for everyone. They are for the true connoisseur of t-shirt art. Their shirts are soft and weathered, creating a comfortable feel with a retro aesthetic. They combine eras of pop culture and original design with a result that is equal parts geek-chick and contemporary hipness.

Today, in the spirit of school (hey, school spirit!) we're looking at the prints for kids:
