Allure's best makeup tips

There are so many bits of makeup advice flying around out there that it can be hard to absorb it all. Not all of it applies to all skin types, and what works for one person's look might not work for yours. But still, we collect these little nuggets of wisdom like the tooth fairy collects teeth because when the right tip comes along, it can rock our world.

Do you want to look like an anime character?

Just in case you've always wanted to look like one of those anime characters with the big dreamy eyes, here's your chance:

A Korean company named DueBa makes contact lenses that makes your iris look as if someone drew it in with a big fate permanent marker. As of late, it's been really popular in Asia to walk around with the appearance of an extra from a Sailor Moon movie. Go figure?

The semi-creepy contact lenses cost $50 a pair and come in practically every color under the sun. That includes black too, ladies. So if you're looking to freak anyone out in a major way, you now have a weapon: scary eyes.

Speaking of scary eyes, have you seen eye jewelry? Check this out...

Tip of the day: Givenchy's Phenomen'Eyes Mascara

We almost found the laziest mascara ever. Almost.

Givenchy's Phemonen'Eyes Masacara has an innovative spherical design built specifically get those little pain in the ass hard to reach lashes. It is also made for all eye shapes – whatever that means. Regardless, it promises big results for such a little sphere. We're perplexed.

If only this baby spun and did all the work for us, we'd be in heaven.

Tip of the day: ColorOn Professional Eye Envy

Holy crap can you believe this? Peel off eye shadow. We're disturbed... and fascinated!

These bad boys are made of creamy mineral eyeshadow. As you might've guessed, the one-size fits all pads need only be tapped on and then peeled off to reveal, as ColorOn calls it, "stunning and avant-garde designs."

Though they seem to be a great idea for those on the run or those with very little beauty panache, we're still not sure whether they are freaky or genius. Regardless, they claim to be crease proof, hype allergenic, and a hell of a time save so more power to you ColorOn.

L'Oreal denies Beyonce skin lightening

Recent L'Oreal ads in Elle, Allure, and Essence feature the always fabulous Beyonce, but the ad is garnering a lot of complaints. Why would anybody complain about Beyonce in an ad? She's a knockout, right?

Yes, except her skin looks several shades lighter than it normally does.

The ads for Feria haircolor are, as you might expect, creating a lot of controversy. L'Oreal denies any lightening of the singer's skin, saying, "We highly value our relationship with Ms. Knowles. It is categorically untrue that L'Oreal Paris altered Ms. Knowles' features or skin tone ..."

Crazy cravings: Lashes To Die For night time eyelash conditioning treatment

Even though we know we'd use this twice, maybe three times and then get tired of painting each individual lash...and even though we know it probably doesn't work...

...the promise of luxurious thick lashes is almost enough to convince us to fork over $125 for Peter Thomas Roth Lashes To Die For Night Time Eyelash Conditioning Treatment.

Yes. This tube of eyelash conditioner costs $125. And it doesn't even help crows feet!

It does supposedly help with "length, thickness and fullness," which could be both misconstrued and considered extremely tempting.

We'll spend a pretty penny on eye creams and moisturizers, but sadly this is a beauty product too far. It's the falsies for us...false eyelashes. What did you think we meant? Sheesh!

Pricey lash conditioner: Cool or crazy?

Neutrogena large ultra-soft eye makeup remover pads are gigantic

We've been known to skip that whole "wash your face before going to bed" more than once, despite with the resulting mascara modern art pillows.

Rather than switch to black sheets, we decided to try out these Neutrogena Ultra-Soft Eye Makeup Remover Pads, thinking that a novel product would inspire us, no matter how tired or you know, boozed up we might be.

The first thing we noticed is that the jar is telling the truth. They are both soft and large. Very large. So large that they were awkward to use under our eyes and it was impossible to swipe away wayward flecks of mascara without taking off all of our mascara and under eye concealer and starting over.

There was just more pad than we needed, even to clear off a heavy night of going out makeup. We even considered cutting them in half, to make them last longer and be less wasteful.

They work great, and they are super, super soft on our delicate eyes, but so far they haven't inspired us to be more diligent in our bedtime routine. We'll probably stick with the equally effective, smaller/less wasteful seeming, and less expensive Almay Oil Free Makeup Remover Pads we usually use the morning after.

Get soft, sweet lips with Naturally Upper Canada lip butter

We're not ashamed to admit it -- we have a slight lip balm addiction. We have tubes and tubs in all our purses, and we can't go to sleep at night without one last fix.

By now, we've gotten picky -- we like products that go on smoothly without being gloppy, and while a bit of flavor is a bonus, we don't want it to be too strong. Keeping all these things in mind, we've found a new love -- Naturally Upper Canada's Cranberry Moro Orange Lip Butter.

Manscara? Really? Where does it end?

Why do we continue to "man-up" and re-noun perfectly useful products just so men can use them? We've seen: mandals, manties, mantyhose, guyliner, murses, and (sigh, yes, yes, we're guilty, too) murves.

Now Taxi Man London cosmetics presents us with manscara, which is "not just for transvestites anymore." No kidding: it's clear. No self-respecting drag queen would waste time with anything less subtle than Diorshow Black Out.

UK distributor Superdrug will also carry guyliner, which is "A new and versatile eye definer created especially for men."

How intriguing. It's especially for men? How so? Does it smell like Old Spice? Have Rogaine in it to make your lashes grow faster and thicker? What's so andro about it? We're dying to know.

We're also dying for this goofy mancific naming thing to end. If you're man enough to go buy -- never mind wear -- eyeliner, you should have already embraced your inner-make up diva.

Tarte EmphasEYES High Definition Eye Pencil

It's rare that you'll hear a bad word about black eyeliner from us. We consider it a staple, as vital to have on hand as sugar, coffee and toilet paper.

Naturally, as black eyeliner afficionados, we were intrigued by the Sephora alert about this new Tarte EmphasEYES High Definition Eye Pencil. It is black! It has a cool applicator! It's extra skinny, allowing you to make very very precise little black lines!

The novelty factor was high, and on our next (embarrassingly frequent) trip to Sephora, it was the top item on our list for checking out. Sadly, this turned out to be impossible.
