Slim Down for Summer with That's Fit

Backpack to school

Backpacks. What's up with that?

We don't recall having to carry a backpack in elementary school, but we do remember having to walk uphill to school, both ways, in the snow. Seems like we would recall a backpack.

Times have changed, and much to the delight of chiropractors everywhere, kids are carrying twice their body weight to school and back, albeit on snow-free, relatively flat surfaces.

This is what they're using:

Back to School: Gymboree

Gymboree is one of the biggest names in quality clothing for children, so it should come as no surprise that they have a great catalog of school fashions (and Halloween costumes- yes, already).

Gymboree has fun and playful couture for kids that are fun and playful. Convenient, don't you think? Like many of the other popular retailers of kidwear they understand the value of the the classics, and as such build upon them. The result is a solid line of timeless clothing and clever accessories.

For example:

Back to School: The Children's Place

The Children's Place is a one stop destination for the shopping parent of school-aged children. Hence the name.

They carry everything from shoes to underwear and everything in-between. Their clothing is cute and classic, sticking to seasonal influences more than those of pop culture. The result is a timeless quality that will look great on kids now and their younger siblings later.

See for yourself:

Junk Food is good for kids (to wear)

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

Junk Food Clothing makes t-shirts for everyone, man, woman and child, but they aren't for everyone. They are for the true connoisseur of t-shirt art. Their shirts are soft and weathered, creating a comfortable feel with a retro aesthetic. They combine eras of pop culture and original design with a result that is equal parts geek-chick and contemporary hipness.

Today, in the spirit of school (hey, school spirit!) we're looking at the prints for kids:

Back to school with GapKids

Ah, the Gap. We fell into you so long ago that we've forgotten what it was like to be free of your charms. We can scarcely recall life before you- there was a crowd and a food court and rows of glass doors that led to a warm place with a bright orange light in the sky. We don't miss it.

That's why when it was time to dress our family in corduroy and denim for the start of the school year we took our spawn to yours: GapKids.

Drawstrings can be dangerous for children

Are drawstring pants dangerous for children?Your baby might look cute with that little drawstring tie, but it could potentially be very dangerous. Nine companies have been sued over the drawstring controversy. According to USA Today, "Dozens of children have died in the past two decades after drawstrings were caught on playground equipment, cribs or other objects, says commission spokesman Scott Wolfson."

We all agree this is pretty serious. It's hard to argue with it, knowing that dozens of families have been devastated. But what are we going to do about shoelaces? Are children really safer with no strings attached?

T-shirts to wear up, up and away!

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

Not much is bigger in the way of popular culture right now than superheroes, which makes geeks chic and true-believers the toast of the party (which we're finally invited to). It's time for us to blow the dust off our stash of comic books, take a deep breath and shout to the world, "I told you so!" After that it's best to drop it.

As goes popular culture, so to the world of t-shirts. While the superhero has been something of a mainstay over the years, the demand for cool shirts featuring the stars of comic and screen is now amazing (also: mighty, incredible, fantastic, spectacular, and uncanny).

Was the Jolie-Pitt baby cover Photoshopped?

Last night we brought you news of the Brangelina twins splashed across the cover of People magazine. Since then you'd have been lucky to read any article on any website about anything at all without running into photos of the smiling pair and their new adorable offspring.

But wait, are they really that adorable -- or did People magazine's photo editors use the magic of technology to make them look a little, erm, sunnier? If you look at the enlarged photo at right (full version here), you'll notice that little Vivienne is smiling. Cute, right? Yeah...except that, according to Parenting magazine, babies don't smile from external simulation until 2-4 months.

So either Brad and Angie had their babies in secret a month and a half earlier than we all thought, or People is working really hard to get their $14 million worth.

Knox and Vivienne Jolie-Pitt: Fashionable twins

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were recently named by Vanity Fair as the Best Dressed Couple of 2008, which is pretty impressive since they spent a good portion of this year in hospital gowns.

According to FameCrawler the celebrity couple "beat out Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore and fashion don't Victoria and David Beckham."

Ashton Kutcher? Did Vanity Fair get Punk'd?

Speaking of the Jolie-Pitts, did you know that they had twins? It's true!

Missing turtle: The t-shirt

Mediocre hits home with this great green t-shirt. At first glance "Missing Turtle" suggests a wayward pet and perhaps conjures images of a sad child and lonely, lonely tears- but funny.

This, however, is not the case. A closer reading of the t-shirt message and the punchline sinks in:

Answers to Michaelangelo. His favorite food is pizza, but he hates anchovies. He has an orange blindfold cut out for the eyes. Keep an eye out at the clubs and bars because he's a party dude. Be careful because he has nun-chucks. His owner really misses him. Call splinter at 555-4372.

Cloud9 Design- Handmade Wearable Art

We are always looking for new independent designers. That's part of the game in this world we call fashion. The other option is to just sit back and take what "Project Runway" gives us- which would undoubtedly be good and pretty entertaining, but in this game you can't get by on hand-outs. You need to be aggressive.

Cloud9 Design Studio was aggressive. They/she approached us, and we checked out the wares. We like what we found.

Cloud9 is currently at Etsy, although a new site appears to be underway. The designs are "handmade wearable works of art for women, men, maternity & baby on organic or USA made fabrics & recycled, vintage apparel."

Festa T-shirts: What kind of girl are you?

Whit Honea is a slacker, a borderline degenerate, and a daydream believer. He's also our resident expert on casual chic. If it's comfortable, and not heinous, he's all over it. He's quite charming, really.

Whatever kind of girl you are (or those you know if it's a gift) Festa T-Shirts has you covered. The company, founded by Christopher Festa in 2003, specializes in producing t-shirts for women that showcase geographic and lifestyle themes. This doesn't mean that Festa doesn't create shirts for non-women, namely men and kids- it just means they've found a nice niche and they are running with it. Hey, why not?
