Fad Diet du Jour: Master Cleanse

Fat behinds ruin the lines of Calvin Klein, and Dior doesn't come in plus sizes. It's time for a diet! But which one? A new one pops up every day. We help you sort them out with Fad Diet du Jour.

The catchy name: Maple Syrup Diet, Lemonade Diet, Master Cleanse

The story: Originally developed by Stanley Burroughs and popularlized in The Master Cleanser, published in 1976. Reintroduced to the world in 2005 by Peter Glickman in his much peppier and promisorily titled book Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days. The idea is that your body is full of toxins, which get stored in your fat cells, and that makes you sick. If you take some time off from ingesting new toxins, i.e. don't eat for a couple of weeks, your body can expel the built up toxins.

The scrawny celebrity dieter:
Confirmed: Beyonce, Robin Quivers. Rumored: Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell, lemon-faced skeletar Renee Zellweger,

The anti-diet propaganda: "It's detox, not a diet! Oh, sure, some people also lose weight..."

Eat like a rich person

So, you're broke. And being broke makes it hard to stay skinny.

Why is that? Simple: Because food costs money. If you had plenty of money, you could go out for a fabulous lunch, eat till you were just full enough, and go on with your day. But you're broke! And you paid for that food! You might only be able to afford noodles or an apple for dinner now. Maybe you'll skip dinner altogether. In any case, you're eating like your financial stability depends on it. And in a way, sadly it does.

Fad Diet Du Jour: Fat Smash Diet

(Click the photo for the Top 10 Fad Diet Flops!)

Fat behinds ruin the lines of Calvin Klein, and Dior doesn't come in plus sizes. It's time for a diet! But which one? A new one pops up every day. We help you sort them out with Fad Diet du Jour.

The catchy name: Fat Smash Diet

The story : In his book by the same name, Celebrity Fit Club doctor Ian K. Smith lays out his approach to diet and exercise, which involves "rewiring" your brain and "smashing" bad habits.

The scrawny celebrity endorsement
: Celebrity Fit Clubbers Chastity Bono, Kelly LeBrock (pictured above), Young MC and hearthrob Gunnar Nelson.

The anti-diet propaganda: "Not a diet, a lifestyle approach"

The regime: Four "phases" over the course of 90 days. You eat four to five small meals a day, exercise regularly and don't have to count calories, although some foods are "forbidden" during the earlier phases.

  • Phase One is a nine day "detox" with lots of water, low fat, a limited range of food eaten raw, grilled or steamed.
  • Phase Two is "foundation" and adds back in foods like avocados, coffee and lean meats.
  • Phase Three, "construction," sees slightly larger portions and the return of bread and pasta, plus dessert!
  • Phase Four aka "the temple" gives you back on beer, wine and pizza, but in theory you'll be able to manage them through portion and craving control learned over the past three phases, plus exercise.

Our judgment
: Sure, this can help people develop a healthier approach to food, and eating several times a day does help with cravings, if you can watch your portions. They do get points for incorporating exercise into the program, which helps you see results faster, and makes you more likely to stick with it.

But since overweight people are notoriously bad at portion control (that's how we got here folks, right?) and there isn't any calorie counting or measurement built into the program, we believe this system is fatally flawed for long-term success.

Showcase delicious deviled eggs in style

Deviled eggs are a party delight. A bit too labor intensive for everyday eating, a plate of deviled eggs is sure to be cleared within minutes of hitting the table.

Knowing that you'll soon have an empty plate, plan ahead and serve them in a quirky egg platter. Save yourself the trouble of having to rush and clear the table, and instead consider the cute plate a part of your table decorations.

There are dozens of decorative egg plates from which to choose, thanks to a far and wide tradition of funny, funky and even elegant designs. Plates with holiday themes, especially Easter, chickens, word plays on devil or egg abound. Whether you pick a brand new, simple white plate, or search long and hard for just the right vintage version, serving deviled eggs will always guarantee your popularity.

Wear your beer

Perhaps we've mentioned at one point or another that we enjoy a nice, cold beer. It's our thing*. It seems that we've also mentioned our appreciation for t-shirts. See where this is going?

Beer + t-shirt = ____, um, we're not good at math, but we know what we like:

Wait! Don't leave! You can read about bikinis anytime, how often do you get the opportunity to appreciate the apron? It is the forgotten accessory of summer, but it is a vital one.

An apron is a great way to express oneself. It can be covered in beer bottles or kittens, crude jokes or sweet sentiments. The possibilities are endless. The BBQ Guys have a few examples below:

Fashionable food and drink for your Kentucky Derby Party

A stylish party is one part fabulous atmosphere, one part gorgeous guests, and one part fashionable food and drink -- a Kentucky Derby party is no exception.

First things first -- you can't celebrate the Derby without serving up mint juleps. This is the traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby, made of sugar, water, mint, and bourbon (or variations thereof). Ideally, they should be served in a chilled, silver cup (which are fun gifts for your guests to take home).

Peanut butter and chocolate? Sure, those are two great tastes that go great together, but let's face it, they're no longer shocking the world with their combined novelty. The time as come for Reese's to step aside, there's a new cup in town, and it ain't kosher.

Rick's Picks: Pickled foods have never been so cool

I'm not a huge fan of pickled foods, but I live in the South, and a LOT of people are. I mean, there are hot and spicy pickles, pickled okra, pickled watermelon rinds, you name it, and, at the risk of offending all you pickle lovers out there, I have to say that it just doesn't seem like a very sexy food, you know?

Well, Rick's Picks is looking to change that. By combining a perfect mix of traditional pickling customs with a healthy dose of tasty fun (not funny taste), Rick's Picks has struck pickled gold. The recipes all use veggies and herbs grown locally (in NYC, where you can find Rick himself most days of the week), and it's all personalized and handcrafted.

And while all that's cool, I haven't even told you about the best part -- the names! We have Phat Beets (pickled beets in rosemary scented brine), Windy City Wasabeans (green beans in a soy-wasabi brine), Pepi Pep Peps (pickled roasted peppers infused with their own essence) and Whup Asp (zesty pickled asparagus. Those sound just about good enough for me to try. Maybe.
